Shoushan spans about 6km from its northern end to the southern end, and has an average width of 2km. The altitude is 356m above sea level, and the mountain has a north-south ridgeline made of coral reef terrain. The slopes on the eastern side of the ridgeline are more gentle, while the western slopes are steeper, forming a natural barrier of the west side of Kaohsiung City. During the Qing Dynasty, the area surrounding Shoushan was a bustling commercial and cultural district. During the Japanese Occupation, the Governor-General of Taiwan renamed Mount Takao to Shoushan, and established the first cement factory in Taiwan, the Asano Cement Co., Ltd. After World War 2, the Ministry of National Defense designated Shoushan as a military control area. Years of military restriction have preserved the diverse natural resources of Shoushan.►

Sizhiwan Bay

Located on the west side of Kaohsiung City and at the southeastern foot of Shoushan Mountain, Sizhiwan Bay is a beautiful harbor with magnificent sunset and natural coral reef landscapes. Originally named Yangluwan or Yangzhiwan, the present name of the bay is thought to be inspired by Min Nan pronunciation of the “Slanted bay with the songs of firewood,” a piece created by poet,  of which slanted bay sounds similar to Sizhiwan in the Min Nan language.

Syongjhen North Gate

This small battery was built in 1875, at the same time as the Qihou fort on the south side of the port. Together they protected the Takou Harbor. The cannons have long since been removed, with only arc-shaped gun mounts remaining. The characters "Hsiung Jhen Bei Men" (Northern Guardian Gate) are large and powerful, corresponding to the characters "Wei Jhen Tien Nan" (Dominating the South) over the Qihou Fortification. The magnificent gates are kept in good order and serve as a reminder of its history.

Longchuan Temple

The temple was originally built as Yuanshing Temple in 1742 by the Buddhist Master Jinyuan, and was partially destroyed by fire in 1891. In 1892, local gentries advocated for its restoration, but the work was incomplete and poorly carried out by lack of funds. However, the number of worshippers remained as before. The current temple was rebuilt in 1923. The name of the temple comes from Longchuan, or Dragon’s Spring, which is a nearby well that is named “Longmu (Dragon’s Eye).”
