Shoushan spans about 6km from its northern end to the southern end, and has an average width of 2km. The altitude is 356m above sea level, and the mountain has a north-south ridgeline made of coral reef terrain. The slopes on the eastern side of the ridgeline are more gentle, while the western slopes are steeper, forming a natural barrier of the west side of Kaohsiung City. During the Qing Dynasty, the area surrounding Shoushan was a bustling commercial and cultural district. During the Japanese Occupation, the Governor-General of Taiwan renamed Mount Takao to Shoushan, and established the first cement factory in Taiwan, the Asano Cement Co., Ltd. After World War 2, the Ministry of National Defense designated Shoushan as a military control area. Years of military restriction have preserved the diverse natural resources of Shoushan.►
